Digital Labrador Kansas City

By Mary Anne McNeish-Sharp, About.com

Digital Labrador :

Friends Pete Obetz and Brud Jones had an idea. An idea to bring the world of digital photography and it's ever changing hardware and software to the masses. Feeling that Kansas Citians had limited access to the ever expanding (and multiplying) world of digital photography, the two photogs created Digital Labrador (2130 Washington St., 816.841-9624) to cater to all sorts of shutterbugs--from amateurs and hobbyist to artists and professionals-- and everyone in between.

Walking In:

When you enter Digital Labrador, you're struck by a few things right off the bat. For one, you're greeted by an overly friendly chocolate lab pup named Beau (hence the name) only to run into a Airstream trailer (used for on location shoots) parked right INSIDE the front door. Both seem to be the unofficial mascots of the uberly chic designed space (by local architectural design firm, El Dorado). But nevermind that--it's what's inside Digital Labrador that really counts.

Special Services :

Digital Labrador provides studio space, top of the line post-production and editing software, workshops and equipment rental.

Digital Labrador Provides the Following Services:

  • DL sells high quality photography papers
  • Printing and scanning services available to the public
  • Capabilites to convert slides to digital.
  • Back up storage capablities on their in-house servers.
  • Equipment rental with everything from cameras from high speed cameras and lenses to video projectors and tripods.

    Digital Software :

DL has enough gadgets and Apples to make any camera guru's head spin. As we know, digital technology is changing everyday and DL provides Apple Workstations with up-to-the-minute software eliminating the need for outsourcing--and with the added bonus that you get to go in and play around with it yourself.

    Private Editing Suite :

One of the most impressive things about Digital Labrador is it's in-house private editing suite which allows you to hold meetings offsite and behind closed doorswith the use of their post-production equipment. Many of us in the media/print world don't have fancy shamancy meeting rooms--how cool to go and have your client meeting in the Crossroads??

    Classes and Workshops:

DL also offers classes and workshops throughout the year for professionals, gurus and those wanting to sharpen their skills.

    Some recent classes include:

    • Digital Travel Photography
    • RAW Workflow Essentials
    • Model Portfolio Development

Check the Digital Labrador website for details. http://www.digitallabrador.com/site/Workshops.html

      Socially Responsible :

Jones and Obetz wanted to bring much more than a photography shop to the Crossroads when they opened Digital Labrador. They wanted to be a part of the community and you can tell the minute you walk through the door. They've worked with Habitat for Humanity, the American Cancer Society, and traveled down to NOLA to bring community awareness for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Digital Labrador is a welcomed addition to the Crossroads--just be prepared to be licked when you walk through the door.
