Corona Cantina #1

The Bottom Line

About.com Rating four out of Five

By Mary Anne McNeish-Sharp, About.com

As I sat under a thatched roof bar and sipped a fruity drink, I faintly heard the crashing of waves in the distance. Did I have my sunscreen? But then the hostess appeared, told us our table was ready, and as I looked out the window to see snow blowing, it was back to reality. Yes, it was February in Kansas City and as much as I hoped, I wasn’t spending the week in Playa del Carmen. But I was at Corona Cantina #1, a close second to the Mexican Riviera….and you don’t even need your passport.

Corona Cantina #1 Guide Review

Corona Cantina #1, the newest addition to the Legend’s at Village West, is the first of many Corona themed concept restaurants of parent company, De Mexico al Mundo. Walking in, you’ll be amazed at Corona’s décor—palm trees, thatched roof bar, surf boards--it's evident that De Mexico spared no expense at giving Corona a resort-like feel. Even on a cold Kansas City day, you instantly feel like you’re somewhere much warmer and MUCH further south.

Corona Cantina also doesn’t skimp on their authentic Mexican menu. You’ll find entrees that are big on flavor, fresh on ingredients and with spice levels to suit every taste bud. What makes Corona so great is that their menu is authentic, taking traditional recipes of Mexico and bringing them straight to your table. If greasy beans and cheese drenched food is what you’re after, you’re in the wrong place.

Location: Legends at Village West (West end by Yard House), KCK, 66111
Phone: 913.788.8770

Pros:

  • Authentic and Fresh Mexican Food
  • Super Cool Corona Themed Restaurant and Bar
  • Amazing Drinks
  • Rooftop Patio with Open Air Bar and Beach Club opens Spring 2008
  • Where else can you get a Spanish lesson in the bathroom!?

Cons:

  • Jalepeno Poppers will burn your lips off.
  • Expect a wait on the weekends.
  • Yummie Drinks can go down a little too quickly.
As we sat down, I was excited to try Corona’s wide selection of salsas (you may even try them in flights) and they range from the super hot (salsa maya) to the pleasant (salsa ranchero). Corona’s guacamole tastes fresh and homemade—chunky and tasty. If you’re in the mood for an appetizer, order the stuffed jalapeno poppers ($8.29) which promises a huge jalapeño stuffed with mouth watering cheese that’s fried to perfection.

I consider myself a fish taco connoisseur of sorts, so their Modelo Fish Tacos ($7.79) were my first choice. I was pleasantly surprised with the large portion (it’s listed on their starter menu) and loved the flavor of the Modelo beer battered fish. Corona also offers an array of seafood choices—try the Mahi-Mahi or shrimp ceviche, which had a great combination of flavors and hint of cilantro.

For larger appetites, Corona offers combination platters like the Playa del Carmen Trio ($19) which lets you sample the Mahi-Mahi, Coconut Chicken, and ribs. The platter is served with beans, rice, and tortillas ($19.99). It’s more than enough for two. You’ll also find traditional Mexican favorites like enchiladas, chile relleno, and fajitas as well as Tex-Mex fare.

As you might imagine, Corona Cantina serves up a wide variety of drinks as any good cantina would. Corona’s signature Green Coconut Machetes ($11) scream relaxing beach vacation and come in a real coconut..macheted behind the bar. I tried the Eroticolada (midori, coconut rum, pina colada) which went down so smooth, I could have had at least 4 more.

Corona also serves mojitos, interesting margaritas (Tropical with Patron), cocktails (Corona Limeade), and of course, plenty of cerveza (Corona, Modelo and Pacifico as well as domestics and other imports).

'Eat, Drink and Relax!'

As I gazed out the window and dreaded heading out into the snow, Corona’s theme, ‘Eat, Drink and Relax’ flashed over one of their tv screens. We figured the only thing we could do was order another cocktail and keep pretending we were someplace with white sand, clear water and plenty of Corona.
