Fall 2008 Kansas City

Fall 2008 Kansas City

By Mary Anne McNeish-Sharp, About.com

Cooling temps, festivals and fairs, apple cider---Kansas City sure seems to come alive during Fall. Here are our Top Events and Things to Do for Fall 2008.

1. Plaza Art Fair

One of Kansas City's favorite traditions (and my personal fave) is the Annual Plaza Art Fair. What started in 1932 has become one of the nation's Top 5 Art Fairs with over 9 blocks of art, crafts and jewelry that feature top artists from the metro, nation and around the globe. Head to the Plaza Art Fair, September 19, 20 and 21st, 2008 and see why it's About KC's Top Pick.

2. Pumpkin Patches

Heading to your local pumpkin patch is many a Kansas Citian's favorite things to do once Fall rolls around. Sort through piles of pumpkins or head out to the patch to pick your own. Hop aboard a railroad, take a hayride, make your way though a corn maze, pet farm animals and enjoy all the fun things that come with fall.

3. Apple Picking

Grab a bucket and head out to the orchard--Both sides of the metro have great places to pick apples--and have yummie things to take home like apple butter, delish apple cider, and even a hot apple fritter to get your fall fix on. Apples are sometimes scarce due to harsh conditions, PLEASE call before you go!

4. Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is one of the best things to do in KC during Fall, period. There's just something about beer, brats, pumpkin launches and polka that screams Fall fun. So grab the fam, get your Runza, and embrace your inner Bavarian.

5. Waterfire

Waterfire made it's debut on the Plaza's Brush Creek in late 2006 and Kansas Citian's begged for a repeat performance. The public art installation by Barnaby Evans combines music, water, and fire--and is mystical, peaceful and beautiful. Waterfire is a must-do this fall--so grab your lawnchairs and prepare to be amazed on October 25th.

6. Weston Irish Festival

The Weston Irish Fest brings everything Irish (and about 7,000 folks) to the sleepy town of Weston, Missouri--located a mere 30 minutes from KC. Enjoy a drive through the Platte County countryside and head to the famed Irish Fest, which boasts Irish dancing and piping, top o' the line entertainment (think Irish rockers The Elders, Young Dubliners, Seven Nations), traditional Irish fare and enough whiskey from the infamous O'Malley's pub to give the whole town of Weston a hang over for the next week.

7. Haunted Houses

For decades now, Kansas Citians have been scared out of their wits by heading to one of our famous Haunted Houses. Whether you're looking to slide down a famed 5 story slide, get lost (and scared to death!) in a haunted cave, or are looking to be spooked in a haunted mansion, Kansas City is the place to be this Halloween.

8. Kansas City Renaissance Festival

Now in it's 32nd year, the KC Ren Fest has over 16 acres of fun filled games, rides, 500 costumed characters, 160+ shops, artisians and even the famed joust and that's just the start. There is something for everyone young and old at KC's Ren Fest....and don't forget to eat that Giant Turkey Leg!!!

9. Halloween

Halloween these days is much more than dressing up and decorating a pumpkin. Many venues around town have family friendly Halloween events for the whole family to enjoy. From Halloweekends at Worlds of Fun and the Jack-o-Latern Walk at Powell Gardens to Boo at the Zoo be sure and head to one of these great Kansas City Halloween Events which are guaranteed to be a spooktaculary ghoulish good time.
